Who is Grand Master Han Wong?

Grand Master Han Wong

Grand Master Han Wong, originally from Malaysia, has been a pivotal figure in Taekwondo for over 50 years. As a pioneer of WTF-style Taekwondo in Edinburgh, Scotland, he initially came to the UK for education but has since made it his home, continuing to teach and inspire new generations of martial artists.

Grand Master Han holds the unique honor of being the only Taekwondo Grand Master in the world to have earned a 9th Dan Black Belt from five prestigious organizations: Kukkiwon, Changmookwan, Global Taekwondo Federation, Jidokwan, and the Malaysian Global Taekwondo Federation. His Taekwondo journey began in the ITF style, where he earned his black belt under the legendary Grandmaster Rhee Ki-ha. He played a crucial role in promoting Taekwondo in the UK during its formative years.

Throughout his career, Grand Master Han has received numerous accolades for his contributions to Taekwondo, including awards from the late General Choi Hong Hi. Despite having overcome cancer, he remains actively involved in teaching and holds roles such as International Class 1 Master Instructor by Kukkiwon, International Class 1 Poom Dan Examiner by Kukkiwon, and International Class 1 Hanmadang Referee.

Grand Master Han's influence extends beyond the UK, having established Jidokwan and Changmookwan schools in India and the Philippines. His charitable work over the past four years has positively impacted over 1,000 families, supporting flood victims and providing essentials such as food and clothing. He has also made it possible for underprivileged nations to participate in Taekwondo events without financial barriers. His charity efforts include blood donations, sanitary pad banks, wheelchair and tricycle donations, support for education, and clothing distribution.

As a first-generation Taekwondo student, Grand Master Han trained with pioneers like Grandmasters Rhee Ki-ha, Choi Kwang Jo, and Park Jong So. His legacy is not only defined by his technical expertise, including his renowned split kick and flying side kick, but also by his dedication to passing on his knowledge and values to future generations.

With a lifetime of achievements and a strong commitment to giving back, Grand Master Han Wong stands as a true icon and an inspiration within the Taekwondo community.

How COVID-19 Impacted Taekwondo and How We Came Out Stronger

The COVID-19 pandemic posed significant challenges to Taekwondo practitioners worldwide. With no offline events or competitions being conducted, practitioners were forced to adapt to an entirely new way of training. Many struggled to maintain physical and mental well-being while missing out on the community aspect of the sport.

Recognizing this, Grandmaster Han Wong initiated online Taekwondo championships, allowing practitioners to compete safely from their homes. The event fees supported those affected by the pandemic, showcasing Taekwondo's resilience and compassion.

These initiatives have since become a symbol of turning adversity into opportunity, keeping the Taekwondo community connected and thriving even in challenging times.

Taekwondo’s Evolution Over the Years

Ancient Origins

Taekwondo's history is rich, rooted in centuries of Korean martial arts tradition. Its origins can be traced to ancient Korean practices like Taekkyeon, which were used for self-defense and military purposes, shaping the foundation for modern Taekwondo.

Formal Development

After World War II, Korean martial arts masters came together to unify their teachings, leading to the birth of Taekwondo. During the 1940s and 1950s, the practice was refined in schools called "kwans," each contributing to Taekwondo's techniques and philosophies. In 1955, Taekwondo officially received its name, meaning "the way of the foot and fist."

Global Expansion

The 1960s and 1970s marked the international spread of Taekwondo, driven by Korean expatriates, military personnel, and diplomats. The founding of the World Taekwondo Federation (WT) in 1973 and the International Taekwondo Federation (ITF) in 1966 laid the groundwork for global recognition.

Olympic Recognition

A pivotal milestone came in 1988 when Taekwondo was included as a demonstration sport at the Seoul Olympics. Its success on this world stage helped secure Taekwondo's status, and by the 2000 Sydney Olympics, it was officially recognized as an Olympic sport, with athletes competing globally for Olympic gold.

Present Day

Today, Taekwondo continues to evolve, balancing its traditional roots with modern competitive sports. As both a martial art and an Olympic discipline, Taekwondo's enduring legacy inspires millions worldwide, showcasing its adaptability and strength across generations.

Future Outlook

Looking ahead, Taekwondo is embracing technological innovations and adapting to changing times. Virtual training platforms, electronic scoring systems, and international online competitions are becoming increasingly common. While preserving its core values and traditional techniques, Taekwondo continues to evolve.

It was a great experience and what a noble cause. In today's lifestyle where egocentrism and selfishness are the rule, the work of charity is priceless. As Mother Teresa said 'Charity is above love.' I agree by more than 100%.

These competitions are incredible events as the funds raised provide food for those less fortunate. Not only will competitors gain international experience without traveling overseas, but more importantly, they contribute to helping people who are less fortunate than ourselves.
